We are quite literally over the moon to announce that Connect won the Website of The Year Award at last night’s UK Public Sector Communications Awards.
At an event held at the Emirates Stadium in London, we beat six other organisations to claim the big prize.
The award, which is given to “outstanding websites offering excellent designs and great user experiences”, was given to Connect for our role in the creation of the Principia Mission campaign website – a project commissioned by the UK Space Agency.
In July 2015, the UK Space Agency appointed Connect to design and build a dedicated Principia Mission website and cross-functional visual identity for British ESA astronaut, Tim Peake. The design and build of the site supports the UK Space Agency in amplifying understanding of Tim’s objectives, with a focus on raising awareness for the cultural, educational and scientific impact of his mission.
In September 2015, Connect and the UK Space Agency launched the website, with Tim’s galactic adventure beginning in December and ending earlier this summer.
Tim was the first British member of the European Space Agency’s Astronaut Corps to visit the International Space Station, with his six-month spell spent carrying out a number of innovative experiments.
A spokesperson for the UK Space Agency said: “We are delighted that our creative partnership with Connect has been recognised on such a grand scale by the UK Public Sector Communications Awards judges.
“The Principia website helped bring Tim Peake’s six-month mission to the entire nation – acting as a one-stop shop brimming with inspirational stories of human space flight, innovative science and engineering, and the dedicated team work and training that goes into launching a team of astronauts into space.
“The site now provides an excellent platform for the UK Space Agency to showcase the latest cutting-edge space activities. With the industry already providing the technology and infrastructure for services such as weather forecasting, navigation, global communications and broadcasting, space technology has become an essential part of everyday life.”
Connect’s joint Managing Directors, Carole Boardman and Janet Symes said: “Our work on the Principia website provided a significant opportunity to extend our reach within the public sector and demonstrate our dynamic design skills.
“The site retains a balance between authority and amicability – distancing itself from the traditional corporate look often attributed to similar campaigns by opting for a captivating visual design.
“We are incredibly proud of the Connect team and our colleagues at the UK Space Agency, and we look forward to seeing where this award takes us in the near future.”
